Pour milk into pan and cook over medium heat just until it boils. Have your child watch this part - Next, add the juice of the lemon and let the milk separate into curds and whey. (You might want to mention Little Miss Muffet) Pour the mixture through a strainer so that the curds are left behind. Squeeze all the moisture out of the curds by putting some into a piece of cheesecloth, forming a ball and twisting. Chill the curds and spread on a cracker. Enjoy!
Dried Apple Snacks
Materials:
apples
string
apple corer
Directions:
Wash the apples, then remove the cores from three or four of them. Cut the apples into thick slices. Thread a length of string through the holes in the apples. Hang outside in the sun or in an oven set to 150 degrees, until the slices are dried. Enjoy!
Bottled Fun
Materials:
tall glass jar with a lid or cork
dry foods - cereal, rice, beans, etc.
Directions:
Layer the foods one at a time until the jar is full. The effect should be many different colored, straight and wavy lines. Even a very young child can do this craft, and the finished jars make wonderful decorative gifts to give the chef in the family!
Crayon Balls
Materials:
broken crayon pieces
plastic sandwich bags
twist ties
metal or glass baking pan
Directions:
Peel paper off of all the crayon pieces. Select a group of different colors and place in a sandwich bag. Seal tightly with a twist tie and place into the pan. Make several bags of crayon pieces and place them in the pan. Put the pan in the sun or a slightly warm oven until the crayon wax is soft, but not hot! Leaving the bags sealed, shape the warm wax into balls and dip into ice water. Remove the bags and color!
Cheese Balls
Materials:
6 tbs grated cheese
2tbs soft butter
10 tbs flour
10 tbs crispie rice cereal
bowl
cookie tray
Directions:
Mix grated cheese,butter, flour and cereal until evenly blended. Form into little balls and place onto greased cookie tray. Bake at 375 degrees for 10 minutes. Cool before eating. Yummm!
